The Putneyville United Methodist Church is located at 1034 State Route 1025 New Bethlehem PA, 16242

The history of the church in Putneyville stretches back past 1870, when this present church building was planned. In 1835, a small class began meeting in an old schoolhouse near the Smullin homestead. Later, William Smullin, the first class leader, invited them to meet in his new house (a large Log cabin). The class then built a church near “the Smullin Grave yard.” In 1844, the class was moved to the Associate Reformed or U.P. Church, now the abandoned school building, in order to be closer to a majority of members.During the Civil War, records of the Sabbath School indicate that it sometimes closed and sometimes found attendance quite poor because of the number of members and teachers who had gone to fight the war.

The Putneyville appointment was part of the New Bethlehem circuit and belonged to two other Methodist charges before 1869 when it became the Putneyville Charge of the Erie Conference with Rev. J.L. Mechlin as the First pastor.

The present building, which became known as the Putney Chapel Methodist Church, was built on the land conveyed to the trustees of the church on December 27, 1870, by George S. Putney. A forty-by-sixty-foot building was planned and erected. The building was dedicated in the early part of 1872.

In 1886, the Belfry was erected at a cost of $78.00; 1889, a tin roof was put on the church; 1892, church was painted silver gray with dark lead trim; 1909, church painted pure white; 1917; piano set in for trial; 1932, electric light installed at corner of church.

In 1924, The Ladies’ Aid Society provided spouting for upper side of church; 1925, was given permission to partition off room in basement; 1938, provided a new ceiling for the church. In 1982, a well was dug at side of building; 1896, a chair lift was installed; 1994, side addition allowing ramp for handicap access; 1997, church chimes were purchased to be played over the community; 1998, the parking lot was paved and new siding on church.

The church continues community involvement; such as, telephone prayer chain, promotes use of community resources and participates in community interdenominational activities.

The New Bethlehem First Fellowship Church is an independent church in New Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Previously known as the First Methodist Church, the church disaffiliated from the United Methodist Church in 2023.

The New Bethlehem First Fellowship Church is located on Penn & Lafayette Street in New Bethlehem PA within the Redbank Valley community.

Methodism in New Bethlehem dates back to 1838 when services were held in the log house of Phillip Hoffman, the location of which is now 341 Broad Street. Smith’s Schoolhouse, about one-half mile out of town, was also used for services until 1848, when a school was built in New Bethlehem and the religious services transferred to it.

The First United Methodist Church was built in New Bethlehem in 1853 and dedicated in February 19, 1854. This church, which was a plain, wooded structure and which served the needs of the congregation for 42 years, stood on the location of the paved parking lot in back of the present church.

Our first ministers were the Rev. George Reeser and the Rev. Ahab Keller who were itinerant ministers out of the Curllsville Charge in 1849. Our church became a station appointment in 1901, except during the years of 1954-1965, when Leasure Run Church was also served by the New Bethlehem pastors.

The church was the place of Worship for the Methodists until 1896, when our present church was completed and dedicated April 19, 1896. An addition to the church was constructed in 1927.

In recent years several changes have been added to the church.

In 1993, the Cross and Flame was added to the Lafayette Street side of the church. The steeple was also added that year.

In 1996, the church celebrated its 100th anniversary. A cabinet was built in the narthex of the church for a membership chain. Each chain link represents a member of the church.

In 1998, the double bulletin board on the side front yard was built and the windows on the outside of the church were covered with new protective glass.

The 65+-year-old organ was renovated over a period of 3 years and completed in 2004. In 2005, a new roof was put on the entire church. The beautiful stain glass restoration project, which was to repair the lead in the windows, was finished in 2007.

In 2009, a project to replaster and paint the sanctuary and narthexes has begun.

In 2015, a new sound system was installed.

The Oak Ridge Community Church is located on Oak Ridge Road, Oak Ridge, Pennsylvania 16245, USA

Methodism began in Oak Ridge with the organization of a small class in 1894 with Mr. George McAninch as the Class Leader. Later that same year, a small child at the time, Mrs. Myrtle Reighard Wohlbaugh turned the first shovel of ground to erect the present church building. The New Bethlehem Vindicator, dated October 19, 1894, stated, “The new ME Church, now being erected at Oak Ridge, is up and partly under roof.” The building was opened and ready for use in 1895.

The church, known as the Methodist Episcopal Church, was part of the Erie Conference. The first pastor to serve was Rev. Francis Marion Small (1895-1897). In 1897, Bishop Fowler as pastor of the New Bethlehem Church appointed Rev. E. N. Askey. This included serving the congregation at Oak Ridge. In 1930, Oak Ridge was placed on the Putneyville Charge and in 1934 the Oak Ridge Church became part of the Summerville Charge. This charge included Summerville, Kingsville and Oak Ridge. The church remained part of the Summerville Charge until 1972, when Oak Ridge was placed with Calvary Church to form the present Hawthorn Charge.

Remodeling of the original church building began and a basement was added in 1954; a parcel of land adjacent to the church was purchased in 1956 for $50.00; pews and carpet were added to sanctuary in 1958; The Evangelical United Brethren and Methodist Churches merged in 1968; The Oak Ridge and Mt. Zion Churches were united with the Hawthorn Calvary Church to form the Hawthorn Charge and a kitchen was added to the basement in 1972; a new piano and organ were purchased in 1974; siding was added to the building in 1982; a well was drilled for an additional source of water in 1985 and a side handicap accessible porch and asphalt parking lot were added in 1991.

In this past century we have moved from horses to automobiles and from outdoor to indoor plumbing; we have witnessed missions to outer space and advances in modern medicine; we have suffered and survived two world wars and several international conflicts. Throughout these varied events of the best and the worst of the human experience, this church has stood as a rock, a refuge, a learning center, and a gathering place. But most importantly, the Oak Ridge Community Church has stood as a link to God for this congregation and this community.
