HISTORY: “Situated next to the scenic Redbank Creek, these 30 coke ovens once played a key role in the area's coal industry. Originally built in the mid 19th century, these ovens operated in 12 hour shifts turning coal into coke well into the 1890s. During the height of the Great Depression, these ovens found a new purpose when they acted as shelter for traveling Americans down on their luck, better known at the time as "hobos". The remains of these ovens act as a reminder of the grueling labor that many endured and accepted as part of everyday life.” RedbankValley.org/RVHRP
