RV Teachers Search for Community Members to Present at 2018 Student Ed-Camp

NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. by: Cecelia Harmon (RVO) – The last school day before Christmas break at Redbank Valley High School has long-time been a class-free day. For the past several years, this has been used as a school-wide Student Awareness Day. After Student Awareness Day was discontinued, a group of teachers from RVHS sought to revamp the schedule to make it engaging for students and community members alike.

The Redbank Valley School District is looking for community members and local business owners to pitch ideas for educational 40 minute long sessions for the 7th – 12th grade classes on Friday, December 21st. In particular, they are looking for people to share their expertise with the RVHS students.

Multiple sessions go on at once throughout the day. Students are able to pick their sessions and customize their day.

As far as content goes, the sky is the limit. Last year, students enjoyed a wide variety of activities and lessons. Clarion MMA led a session of self defense. Alumni returned and did a host of sessions from strength and conditioning to “How to survive the first year of college.” Teachers stepped up to showcase their “after-school” hobbies and talents. Teachers created sessions on cupcake decorating, fly-fishing, and holiday-card making. A school board member showed students how to change the oil, a tire, and check the fluids in a vehicle in a session called Auto Mechanics 101. One classroom was even turned into an escape room where students had to solve puzzles to try to “break out.” A Mystery Skype session with fellow high school students in France even took place. The classes had to guess the location on the other one based on geographical questions.

Community members can choose to host sessions all day or only one or two, depending on what their schedule allows.
