Local student Finalist in U.S. Senate Youth Scholarship Program

NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. by: Cecelia Harmon (RVO) – Colin Sheffer, a Redbank Valley High School Senior, has been named a finalist for the United States Senate Youth Scholarship Program. This program selects two students from each state who have expressed a desire to launch a career in public service. The students will then travel to Washington D.C. where they will then have the opportunity to interact with and meet with Supreme Court Justices and Senators. Each of the students will also receive a $10,000 scholarship. The United States Senate Youth Program is a tremendous opportunity for any young person wishing to make future connections in our country’s leadership.

Mr. Sheffer has brought forth a very competitive application for this scholarship. Sheffer has shown an interest in public service since elementary school and has since been highly engaged in local leadership. Earlier in 2018, Sheffer was chosen to serve as the Junior New Bethlehem Borough Council Person where he is required to attend borough meetings and has an official seat at the table. He also has played a large role in the campaign of State Representative Donna Oberlander; Sheffer has walked in parades, handed out fliers, worked the phone bank, and even gave a personal testimonial in one of her campaign videos. Sheffer has also shown leadership in the school as the Executive Officer for Student Council, the President of the Future Business Leaders of America Club, and as a leader of the Redbank Valley High School Bible Club.

Colin Sheffer very humbly expressed his excitement to be chosen as a finalist:

“I’m ecstatic to have been awarded this opportunity. Usually when we think of Redbank Valley, we don’t think of sending our students to represent us in these programs in Harrisburg, let alone, potentially, Washington, DC. I’m honored and excited to be apart of this national program.”

The winners of this scholarship will be chosen December 14th.

Congratulations and Best of Luck to Colin Sheffer!
