Stewart Bain Sworn in as Borough Councilman

NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. (RVO) by John Gerow – Following his appointment at the January 6th Reorganizational Meeting, Mr. Stewart Bain was sworn in as Borough Councilman to fill an open position. Mr. Bain had previously served as an elected councilman. Mayor Gordon Barrows administered the oath of office to Mr. Bain.

The Council took Chief Robert Malnofsky’s Police report at the beginning of the meeting. Chief reported on the recent basketball tournament fund raiser on January 18 in East Brad. Teams from the Rimersburg Fire Company, East Brady Fire Company, Karns City Elementary Basketball League (Coaches), New Bethlehem Police Department, and the Union School District Teachers participated in the event. Despite bad weather, Chief Malnofsky said that he was pleased with the turnout and that he hopes to see the event grow next year. The Chief commended NB Police Department Secretary Rebekah Weckerley and her husband Bob for their efforts in putting the evening together.

Following the Chief’s report, the Council retired into an Executive Session, after which Mayor Gordon Barrows delivered his first Mayor’s Report. The Mayor reported that he has been busy in his first couple of weeks on the job. He attended the Fire Department’s Mass Violence Awareness and Survival Tactics Training on January 9. The new mayor mentioned that he has also attended some community meetings and hopes to attend more. He also reported that he did a “ride along” with Chief Malnofsky of the New Bethlehem Police Department. Mayor Barrows said that he hoped to attend more community meetings and do additional “ride alongs.”

Councilman Brian Fox reported that the Fire Company will be conducting a Narcan training on Thursday evening. Residents that attend will receive a Narcan dose if they want one.

Street Commissioner Roger Hilliard reported the Street Department has been repairing and replacing signs around the borough. He also reported continuing small repairs to the borough’s trucks.

In new business matters, Council adopted a motion to develop a policy and waiver to allow Council members to “ride along” with borough police and street crews. Council approved paying current bills and recessed into a second executive session of the night.

New Bethlehem Borough meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm at the Alltel/Windstream Building on Lafayette Street. Folks may contact the Borough’s office to be placed on the meeting agenda.
